Building Future-Ready Thinkers Through Reading, Writing, and Communication

Developing confident readers, writers, and communicators ready for college, careers, and the real world. The English Department at Mount Vernon High School helps students build strong reading, writing, and communication skills. Through literature, composition, and discussion, students develop critical thinking skills that prepare them for college, careers, and everyday life.

All students take English 9 and 10, followed by a senior writing course that matches their goals and interests. Upperclassmen can choose from a variety of electives, including United States Literature, and may pursue Honors or college-level courses for a more challenging experience.

The English Department offers courses designed to support every learner while encouraging growth, creativity, and academic success.
